Deloraine, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Deloraine lies on the Meander River in central northern Tasmania, about 50 kilometres west of Launceston, with the long wall of the Great Western Tiers rising behind it. Settled in the colonial period, it kept a streetscape of Georgian and Victorian buildings stepping down to the river, and is often counted among the prettiest of the island's inland towns. The name is taken from a character in Sir Walter Scott's poem The Lay of the Last Minstrel. The surrounding Meander Valley is rich farming country, growing poppies, onions and potatoes, and the town has become a noted arts and crafts centre — its Tasmanian Craft Fair, one of the largest in the country, draws around 18,000 visitors each spring.
