Ellendale (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Ellendale is a small rural locality in the Derwent Valley of southern Tasmania, about 75km from Hobart and 22km south-west of Hamilton. Meadowbank Lake, formed on the River Derwent, marks its north-eastern boundary, while the Broad and Jones rivers also run through the district. The place is said to be named after the wife of Nicholas John Brown, a colonial Minister for Lands and Works. A post office opened in 1880, and the locality's boundaries were formally gazetted in 1959. Set among hills and farmland in the upper Derwent country, Ellendale today is a quiet agricultural community of scattered holdings, well off the main tourist routes through the valley.
