Gilberton (SA), SA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Gilberton is a historic, well-to-do inner suburb on the northern bank of the River Torrens, a short distance from the centre of Adelaide and bounded by the river and a ring of terraces. The district was bought in 1846 by Joseph Gilbert, of Pewsey Vale winery fame, who named it Gilbert Town and a few years later divided it into lots for sale. Early brickworks, farms and gardens gave way to housing, and by the eighteen-nineties the suburb was substantially built. Its higher northern ground, with views over the valley, drew wealthier buyers, and many of their ornate Victorian homes still stand on generous grounds under heritage protection. Along the river runs the leafy Torrens Linear Park, while a restored pedestrian swing bridge links the suburb across the water to neighbouring St Peters.
