Gordon (NSW), NSW
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Gordon sits on Sydney's Upper North Shore, about fourteen kilometres north-west of the central business district, and serves as the administrative centre of the Ku-ring-gai district. The leafy, mostly residential suburb runs along the bushland banks of Stony Creek. It took its name from the Gordondale estate of an early landholder, replacing the area's first name of Lane Cove in 1879. One of its best-known houses is Eryldene, a heritage-listed home and celebrated camellia garden built around 1913 for the linguist and gardener Eben Gowrie Waterhouse, and now open to the public. Dr John Bradfield, the chief engineer of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, lived in the suburb, as did Annie Wyatt, who founded the National Trust in Australia. Gordon is also home to Sydney's largest flying-fox colony, protected within its reserves.
