Gunns Plains, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Gunns Plains is a small farming district in north-west Tasmania, set in the fertile valley of the Leven River about 20 kilometres south of Ulverstone. It is named after the botanist Ronald Campbell Gunn, who is recorded as reaching the valley in 1860, and a post office served the community from 1900. Rich volcanic soils support grazing, mixed farming and a local vineyard, while more than a hundred limestone caves riddle the surrounding hills. The show cave at Gunns Plains, open for guided tours, and the nearby Wing's Wildlife Park are the area's best-known attractions, drawing visitors into a quiet, green pocket of the north-west.
