Longford (Tas.), TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Longford is a historic town in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, about 20 kilometres south of Launceston where the Macquarie and South Esk rivers meet. The district was the country of the Panninher clan of the North Midlands nation. European farmers began arriving in 1807, many resettled from Norfolk Island, and the town, first called Latour, was renamed Longford in 1833, probably at the suggestion of the land commissioner Roderic O'Connor. Longford is best known for two convict-built estates on the National Heritage List, Woolmers and Brickendon, and for the 1839 Christ Church. Between 1953 and 1968 the fast public-road Longford Circuit hosted motor racing, including two Australian Grand Prix, and the town still runs one of the country's longest-running agricultural shows.
