Melton Mowbray, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Melton Mowbray is a small rural locality in the Southern Midlands of Tasmania, about 60 kilometres north of Hobart, where the Midland Highway meets the Lake Highway heading up to the central lakes. It was originally known as Cross Marsh, and took its present name from Samuel Blackwell, a settler born in the English town of Melton Mowbray in Leicestershire, who arrived in the district in 1840. Blackwell built the Melton Mowbray Hotel, a coaching stop on the road between Hobart and Launceston, in 1849. The present locality name was formally gazetted in 1974. Today Melton Mowbray is a quiet highway junction among the grazing properties of the Midlands.
