Miena, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Miena is a small highland locality at the southern end of Great Lake, in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, sitting at about 1,050m above sea level roughly 120km north-west of Hobart. The area has a long Aboriginal history, associated with the Luggermairrenerpairer clan; the name, applied during the hydro-electric era, is said to mean 'lagoon-like'. European explorers passed through in the early 19th century, and from 1911 the Great Lake was dammed and progressively raised to feed Tasmania's hydro-electric scheme, with major works in the 1920s and again in the 1960s and 1980s. Today Miena is best known for trout fishing on Great Lake, which has hosted the World Fly Fishing Championships, and the historic Waddamana Power Station nearby operates as a museum.
