Mount Morgan, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Mount Morgan is a historic mining town on the Dee River in Central Queensland, about 38 kilometres south-south-west of Rockhampton. It grew up around one of the richest gold and copper mines in the world, founded in 1882 and named after the Morgan brothers, who held the original leases. Over its long life the Mount Morgan Mine yielded hundreds of tonnes of gold and several hundred thousand tonnes of copper before finally closing in 1990. The fortune one shareholder, William Knox D'Arcy, drew from the mine helped bankroll the oil venture in Persia that eventually became the company known today as BP. The town keeps a wealth of heritage buildings from its boom years. With mining gone, tourism now drives the town, drawing visitors to its museums, heritage sites and mountain bike trails.

We’d rather leave these open than publish a number we can’t stand behind. Here’s where each one stands.

  • Amenities & accessNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap amenity mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
  • Green spaceNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap green-space mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
  • TransportNot scored yet — our OpenStreetMap public-transport mapping is still rolling out across suburbs.
  • SchoolsNot scored yet — school performance (ACARA / ICSEA) needs a data-reuse licence cleared before we can publish it.
  • SafetyNot scored yet — Australia has no single open crime dataset and safety data carries defamation and legal care, so it is gated pending a go/no-go and will be data-only when added.
  • CommunityNot scored yet — we won't reduce community to a number from a proxy. We'd rather leave it open than publish an invented value judgement.
