Nabowla, TAS
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Nabowla is a small farming locality in Tasmania's north-east, about 16 kilometres west of Scottsdale, with the Denison and Little Forester rivers tracing part of its boundary. Gazetted as a locality in 1964, it takes a name said to be an Aboriginal word for 'river'. The district is best known for the Bridestowe Lavender Estate, one of the largest privately owned lavender farms in the world, whose long rows of purple bloom draw crowds through the summer flowering season. The Tasmanian novelist and short-story writer James McQueen farmed at Nabowla for much of his working life, and beyond the lavender it remains a quiet patch of grazing and mixed-farming country.
