Rosebery (Tas.), TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Rosebery is a mining town on the west coast of Tasmania, set in steep, forested country in the island's rugged west. Gold was discovered in the area by prospector Tom McDonald in 1893, and the field was named after Lord Rosebery, the British statesman and later prime minister. After early small-scale workings, large-scale mining of the rich polymetallic ore body began in 1936 and has continued more or less ever since, making Rosebery one of Australia's longest continuously operating mines. The Rosebery mine, today run by MMG, produces zinc, lead and copper concentrates along with silver and gold. The town exists largely to serve the mine, and its fortunes have long risen and fallen with it.
