Sherwood is a quiet, established suburb on the south-western side of Brisbane, about eight kilometres from the city centre, with the Brisbane River forming its western edge. Oxley Road threads north to south through the suburb, linking neighbouring Graceville and Corinda, and the Ipswich railway line and Sherwood railway station give residents an easy run into town. Houses are mostly low and medium density, with a small retail strip along Sherwood Road. The district grew up in the second half of the nineteenth century around its school, which opened in 1867 and was renamed Sherwood in 1878, and a number of fine timber homes and churches from that era survive as heritage-listed landmarks. Its great green set piece is the Sherwood Arboretum, a riverside botanical garden and lake laid out in the 1920s.
