Stanley is a small fishing port and tourist town on Tasmania's far north-west coast, about 380 km from Hobart. It sits beneath The Nut, a sheer-sided remnant of an ancient volcano rising 143 metres straight from the sea, which Aboriginal people knew as Munatrik; visitors reach the top by a steep walking track or a chairlift. The town grew up around the Van Diemen's Land Company, which established a base here in 1826 and ran a port from the following year, and it keeps an unusually complete streetscape of early colonial cottages and warehouses. It is named after Lord Stanley, a British colonial secretary who later became prime minister.
