Waddamana, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Waddamana is a tiny former power-station settlement in the Central Highlands of Tasmania, about 112 kilometres north-west of Hobart, with the River Ouse running through and Lake Echo on its western edge. The name comes from a Tasmanian Aboriginal word said to mean noisy water. A post office served the community from 1913, and its population climbed above a hundred in the early twentieth century while an early hydro-electric scheme was being built. The two power stations here have since been decommissioned, and one now operates as a museum telling the story of Tasmania's early hydro-electricity. Surrounded by highland lakes and moors, it is a quiet, historic spot well off the main tourist routes.
