Woodford (Qld), QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Woodford is a rural town in the City of Moreton Bay, Queensland, about 73km north-north-west of Brisbane and 25km north-west of Caboolture. This is the country of the Duungidjawu (also known as Kabi Kabi) and Dalla peoples. European settlement began in 1841 when the Archer brothers established Durundur Station on the Stanley River, and when land was opened for selection in 1877 a settler built a hotel beside a river ford, creating the village first known as Yatesville. It was later named Woodford after Henry Conwell Wood and the ford itself. Timber-cutting and dairying drove the early economy, with a cooperative dairy factory opening in 1904. Today the town is best known nationally for the Woodford Folk Festival, held each year over the Christmas-New Year period.
