Auchenflower, QLD

Auchenflower is a hilly, inner-western riverside suburb of Brisbane, a little over two kilometres from the city centre, where the streets fall away towards the Brisbane River and pockets of greenery open up scenic views. Its unusual name comes from a nineteenth-century rural estate, christened by the pastoralist and politician Thomas McIlwraith around 1880; the word is Gaelic and is said to mean field of flowers. Electric trams once ran along Milton Road from neighbouring Toowong, and the suburb is still threaded by two busy thoroughfares, Coronation Drive and Milton Road, both running out from the city. A riverside path, the Bicentennial Bikeway, follows the water through to Toowong. Among its heritage-listed landmarks are Raymont Lodge and Moorlands, the latter now standing within the grounds of the Wesley Hospital.
