Paddington (Qld), QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Paddington is a hilly inner-western suburb of Brisbane, a few kilometres from the city, celebrated for its timber Queenslander houses stepping up steep ridges and gullies. The slopes were home to the Turrbal people before British settlement began in the 1850s, when the area was first known as Ti-Tree Flats; it later took its name from a local farm whose owner recalled his London birthplace. Today the ridgetop strips of Given Terrace and Latrobe Terrace draw crowds to boutiques, cafes, galleries and antique stores. Government House at Fernberg has served as the official residence of Queensland governors since 1911. The suburb is also widely cited as the inspiration for the children's series Bluey. Among its residents was Ned Hanlon, a Queensland premier born locally, and wartime aviator Gordon Olive.
