Churchlands, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Churchlands is an affluent suburb of Perth, lying about eight kilometres north-west of the central business district in the City of Stirling. Its name records the Roman Catholic Church, which bought the land from the Trigg family in 1891. Most of its houses date from the 1980s onward, giving the suburb a settled, comfortable air. Along its eastern edge lies Herdsman Lake, a broad wetland alive with waterbirds and threaded by picnic spots and birdwatching trails. Churchlands is well supplied with schools, among them Hale School and Newman College, and was for many years home to a campus of Edith Cowan University, which closed in 2008. That site has since been rebuilt as the Churchlands Green housing estate, with part of the old grounds kept as a reserve.
