Claremont is a well-to-do western suburb of Perth, set on the north bank of the Swan River about midway along the old road between Perth and Fremantle. Long before European settlement the Noongar people drew on the area for water, for fishing and for catching waterfowl. A roadside inn opened at Freshwater Bay in 1830, and a nearby wetland — once Butler's Swamp, now Lake Claremont — still carries an echo of those days; the suburb itself took its name from Claremont Estate, which a settler named after his wife, Clara. The Perth–Fremantle railway arrived in 1881, and the township grew up around the station and Bay View Terrace. Today Claremont is known for its cluster of private schools, the Claremont Showground that hosts the annual Perth Royal Show, and the riverside shopping around the Claremont Quarter.
