Conara, TAS

Conara is a small rural locality in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, about 50 kilometres south of Launceston where the Esk Highway meets the main north-south route. The name is believed to be an Aboriginal word for coal or charcoal; the place was earlier known simply as The Corner, and then Conara Junction, before being gazetted under its present name in 1972. Its history is tied to the railway: as a junction it once funnelled coal from the east-coast mines, and the Fingal line through here still carries freight. An 1850 inn known locally as 'The Disappearing House' helped anchor the early settlement. Today Conara is a quiet crossroads among the grazing and cropping farms of the Midlands, its old station building a reminder of busier days.
