Nile, TAS

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Nile is a rural locality in the Northern Midlands of Tasmania, about 30km south-east of Launceston and 18km south-east of Perth, with the South Esk River forming part of its western boundary. The area was originally known as Lymington, and the present name was formally adopted when the locality was gazetted in 1959. It remains a quiet farming district of paddocks and grazing land. Its best-known landmark is Clarendon House, an imposing Georgian mansion built in 1838 beside the South Esk River; once the centre of a large wool and grain estate, it is now owned by the National Trust and open to visitors as one of Australia's grandest colonial homesteads.
