Dumbleyung, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Dumbleyung is a small Wheatbelt town in Western Australia, about 267 kilometres south-east of Perth and a short drive from Wagin. Its name comes from the Noongar language — said to derive from 'Dambeling', possibly meaning a large lake or inland sea, or from 'dumbung', a game once played with bent sticks. The townsite was established in 1907 at the end of a railway line from Wagin, and grew into the main service centre for its district. Dumbleyung's claim to fame lies just out of town at Lake Dumbleyung, where in 1964 Donald Campbell drove the hydroplane Bluebird to a world water speed record. Wheat and other cereals still anchor the local economy, and around 240 people live in the town.
