East Fremantle, WA

East Fremantle, known to locals as East Freo, is an affluent, mainly residential suburb about thirteen kilometres south-west of central Perth, bounded to the north by the Swan River. It forms its own small local government area, the Town of East Fremantle, immediately east of the port city of Fremantle. Before European settlement the Noongar people drew food and fresh water from the river edges and grassy flats. Most of the suburb took shape during the Western Australian gold rushes of the late 1890s and early 1900s, beginning with the workers' cottages of the historic Plympton district, and expanded through the following decades. Canning Highway and Stirling Highway cross in the suburb and carry traffic toward Perth and Fremantle. At its heart is East Fremantle Oval, home of the East Fremantle Football Club in the West Australian Football League.
