Gingin, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Gingin is one of Western Australia's older inland towns, lying about 67 kilometres north-north-east of Perth on the coastal plain north of the city. The name comes from an Aboriginal word recorded as Jinjin by the explorer George Fletcher Moore in 1836; its meaning is uncertain but is generally thought to refer to a footprint or to a place of many streams, a nod to the brooks that thread the district. Moore visited in 1836 and William Locke Brockman took up the first station in 1841; the town itself was declared in 1883 and reached by railway by the 1890s. Gingin is now well known for the Gravity Discovery Centre, with its dramatic leaning tower, and the nearby astronomical observatories that study the southern skies.
