Grandchester, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Grandchester is a small rural town in the Ipswich district of south-east Queensland, about 75 kilometres west of Brisbane. It began life as Bigge's Camp, named after the pastoralist Frederick Bigge, but in 1865 Governor George Bowen — a keen classicist — rendered the name into mock-Latin as 'Grandchester', a grander title for what was then the terminus of Queensland's first railway. That line, opened in 1865, is often described as the first narrow-gauge mainline railway in the world, and the original timber station still stands. The town also keeps the historic Grandchester Sawmill, a rare survivor of its steam-powered type. Surrounded by grazing country, it remains a quiet village proud of its pioneering railway heritage.
