Holland Park, QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Holland Park is an established, mostly residential suburb in Brisbane's south-east, around nine kilometres from the city centre, set across gently hilly ground that the busy Logan Road bisects. The area was settled from the eighteen-sixties, when the land was used mainly for farming, and it takes its name from the merchant Julius Holland, who for many years owned a large tract of scrub here that was later subdivided as the Holland Estate. Trams reached the suburb along Logan Road in 1926, encouraging closer settlement, and many of the timber homes that give Holland Park its character date from the years after the Second World War. Among its landmarks is the Mount Thompson Crematorium, opened in 1934 as Queensland's first, set in landscaped grounds on Nursery Road, while local shops and a public library serve the surrounding streets.
