Koorda, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Koorda is a small town in the northeastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia, about 236km northeast of Perth and 43km north of Wyalkatchem. The name comes from a Noongar word recorded as meaning 'married person'. The area opened up with the railway: a line from Wyalkatchem towards Mount Marshall was planned in 1913, a siding named Koorda followed in 1914, and the townsite was gazetted in 1917. Grain elevators were installed at the siding in 1932. Wheat and other cereals are the mainstay, and Koorda operates as a Co-operative Bulk Handling receival point. It is the main centre and council seat for the surrounding Shire of Koorda.
