Kulin, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Kulin is a small town in the eastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia, around 280 kilometres east-south-east of Perth. European settlement of the district began about 1909, and the town site was gazetted in 1915, the name taken from nearby Kulin Rock, which early surveyors recorded as Coolin. Kulin is best known today for the Tin Horse Highway, a stretch of road lined with more than a hundred quirky tin horse sculptures built by local farmers, which leads to the annual Kulin Bush Races held each October. The town also boasts a celebrated freeway-style water slide at its aquatic centre, an unexpected attraction in a dry inland farming community.
