Laverton is a remote gold-mining town in the Goldfields region of Western Australia, on the western edge of the Great Victoria Desert about 957km north-north-east of Perth and 124km from Leonora. It marks the western end of the Outback Way, the long inland route that runs across the continent toward Winton in Queensland. Gold found in 1896 brought the first rush; the settlement was first called British Flag, then renamed Laverton in 1898 after Dr Charles Laver, and the townsite was surveyed soon after. Mining still drives the town, with large gold mines such as Sunrise Dam nearby and a major nickel operation to the west. A nickel find at Windarra in 1968 helped spark the famous Poseidon share boom.
