Maylands (WA), WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Maylands is a riverside inner suburb on the northern bank of the Swan River, around four kilometres north-east of central Perth in the City of Bayswater. Long before the town took shape in the 1890s, the peninsula was country of the Whadjuk Noongar people, who knew it as Moorordup, said to mean place of the nose for the way the land juts into the river. The name Maylands first appeared on a land-auction poster in 1896, though its exact origin remains uncertain. Maylands once held Perth's main airport, and it was here that aviator Charles Kingsford Smith touched down to complete the first non-stop flight across Australia. The old brickworks pits became a golf course, and today a foreshore path, yacht club and lively cafe strip line the suburb.
