Menora is a small, established suburb in Perth's inner north, within the City of Stirling and a short distance from the city centre. It was created in 1954, when it was split from neighbouring Mount Lawley and given official boundaries. The name comes from an old theatre called the Menora that once stood within the area; it was also embraced by the local Jewish community, for whom the menorah carries deep significance, and from the air a cluster of the suburb's streets is laid out in the branching shape of a menorah. Today Menora is the heart of Jewish life in Perth, centred on the Perth Hebrew Congregation, with a Jewish school, a community centre and kosher food shops close at hand. Quiet, tree-lined residential streets and a scatter of retirement villages give the small suburb a settled, village-like feel.
