Mingenew, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Mingenew is a small Wheatbelt town in the Mid West of Western Australia, about 383 kilometres north of Perth and 119 kilometres east of Geraldton, and the seat of its shire. It is named after nearby Mingenew Spring, from an Aboriginal word recorded by settlers in the 1850s and variously said to mean 'place of many ants and flies' or 'place of many waters'. The Gregory brothers explored the district in 1847, the Midland railway arrived in 1891, and the town was gazetted in 1906. Grain dominates the local economy, and Mingenew styles itself the Grain Centre, hosting what is described as the Southern Hemisphere's largest inland grain receival site. Spring wildflowers and nearby Coalseam Conservation Park, scene of an early colonial coal find, draw visitors.
