Narrogin, WA

Narrogin is a regional town in the Wheatbelt of Western Australia, on the Great Southern Highway about 192 kilometres south-east of Perth. Its name comes from an Aboriginal word first recorded in 1869 for a pool or watering place, though the exact meaning is uncertain. Pastoralists took up the surrounding country from the 1860s, and early settlers also cut sandalwood and stripped mallee bark. The arrival of the Great Southern Railway in 1889 transformed Narrogin into a busy junction linking several lines, and it grew into one of the inland district's main centres. Declared a town in 1897, it remains a hub for farm services and grain handling, with the historic Old Court House now a local museum.
