Northampton, WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Northampton is one of Western Australia's oldest towns, in the Mid West about 50 kilometres north of Geraldton and some 480 kilometres from Perth. The surrounding country was long home to Aboriginal people, and rock-art sites survive in the district. The town began as a mining settlement after lead ore was found nearby in 1848, and was first known simply as The Mines before being gazetted in 1864 and named after the colonial governor, John Hampton. For a time lead and copper from the area made up a sizeable share of the young colony's exports. As the mines wound down the district turned to wheat and sheep, and today Northampton is known for its heritage streetscape and for the wildflowers that colour the surrounding country each spring.
