Northbridge (WA), WA

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Northbridge is the small, dense district immediately north of Perth's city centre, separated from it by the main railway line. It is the city's principal nightlife and cultural quarter: the bars, clubs and restaurants of James and Lake Streets, a long-established Chinatown around Chung Wah Lane, and the cluster of state cultural institutions on its southern edge. The food runs from Italian to Vietnamese, reflecting generations of migrant settlement. The name is a plain piece of geography — the area was long known informally as 'North of the Bridge', over the rail line, before it was formally gazetted as Northbridge in 1982.
