Rosewood is a rural town west of Brisbane in the City of Ipswich, about 60 kilometres from the Queensland capital and a short drive beyond Ipswich itself. Its name is thought to come from the rosewood trees — either a local acacia or a mahogany species — that grew through the district when it was first settled. The railway reached Rosewood in 1865, and the town later served the coal mines of the surrounding Lanefield and Oakleigh fields. Among its landmarks are the timber St Brigid's Catholic Church, opened in 1910, a heritage-listed courthouse, and a cluster of historic churches of several denominations. Commuter trains still link Rosewood to Brisbane, and the district keeps a quiet farming and country-town character on the city's western edge.
