Trayning, WA
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Trayning is a small town in the north-eastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia, about 236km east of Perth and 44km from Wyalkatchem. Its name comes from nearby Trayning Well, the Aboriginal name of a local water source, and is said to derive from a word meaning 'snake in the grass by the campfire'. As the railway pushed inland, a townsite was reserved as Trayning Siding in 1910 and gazetted as Trayning in 1912, the year the school opened. Wheat and cereal growing underpin the district, and the town is a CBH grain receival point, its elevators dating from 1932. Spring wildflowers and an annual tractor-pull event draw visitors to the area.
