Warwick (Qld), QLD
By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·
Warwick lies on the Condamine River in the Southern Downs of inland Queensland, about 130 kilometres south-west of Brisbane in rich Darling Downs farming country. It is the country of the Gidhabal people, who called the area Gooragooby. Pastoralists led by Patrick Leslie took up the Canning Downs run nearby, and the township followed from 1847, with the first land sold in 1850. Warwick East State School opened that same year and is described as the oldest state primary school still operating in Queensland. The town is known for its honey-coloured sandstone buildings, many on the state heritage register, and is fond of its Rose City nickname, celebrated each year with the Warwick Rose and Rodeo festival.
