Westonia, WA

Westonia is a small town in the eastern Wheatbelt of Western Australia, about 314 kilometres east of Perth and 52 kilometres east of Merredin, just north of the Great Eastern Highway. It is named after Alfred David Weston, a sandalwood cutter and prospector who discovered gold here in 1910; the find was first known as 'Weston's Reward'. A townsite grew from 1914 and was gazetted in 1926. Gold mining remains central to the local economy, anchored by the Edna May mine, alongside Wheatbelt farming. Visitors come for the granite domes of nearby Elachbutting Rock and a tidy, heritage-styled main street; Westonia won the state Tidy Towns sustainability award in 2009-10.
