Wynnum, QLD

By Lauren McCaleb · Reviewed by Dylan Duncan ·

Wynnum is a coastal suburb of Brisbane on the shores of Moreton Bay, about twenty kilometres east of the city, long popular for its foreshore, its jetty and a large tidal wading pool. With the neighbouring suburb of Manly it was once spoken of as one of a pair of 'twin towns'. Aboriginal people have been connected to the Quandamooka — the Moreton Bay region — for more than twenty-five thousand years. The suburb's name is believed to come from winnam, said to be a word for the pandanus palm, though the link is uncertain. European settlement spread slowly until the railway reached the bayside in the late 1880s, after which Wynnum grew quickly into the relaxed seaside township it remains today, still centred on its breezy Moreton Bay foreshore.
